Overview

Wellhub (formerly known as Gympass) is a wellness platform offered as a perk. Before COVID-19, Gympass only provided on-site access to gyms and studios.

However, during the pandemic, the app introduced new categories of activities to offer an all-in-one subscription for online classes, personal trainer sessions, and other wellness apps.
With these new functionalities and evolving business needs, the search experience needed to be redesigned.

Outcome
Delivering a standard search experience for most used terms and increase discoverability of new activities.

Problem:

Users can't find activities they are looking for.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of new activities, one of the most common complaints from users was the difficulty in finding available activities for them. The app was receiving highly negative feedback, had a low conversion rate, and our users were dissatisfied with their experience.

We already had extensive user research and feedback about the discoverability issue, so we didn't see the need for new research at this point.

The team was certain about what needed improvement, so we began to define the main actions and possible scenarios.

We also had user behavior analysis, which showed that around 70% of users consistently searched for specific terms such as: Yoga, Pilates, Swimming class, and Gym. Therefore, we decided to prioritize those scenarios.

We decided to redesign the search experience on the mobile app to follow common design patterns, like improve discoverability by suggesting recomendations, auto-complete, filters, to help users find what they are looking for.

To guide the design process, I used the Jobs to be Done framework to help the team empathize and visualize the main customer goals and motivations.

With this activity, we decided to translate the customer needs into new functionalities of our search feature.

Solution:

Frame 2085664141

Help users find a yoga class they can attend and
suggest alternative activities.

Autocomplete:
Yoga is a generic term, so we created a search with autocomplete that can reduce errors and get users to relevant results faster, minimizing the chance of an unsuccessful search.

Results categories:
We also grouped the search results into different categories to increase search relevance by showing different facilities, classes and APPs.

Search History:
The search history in this context was helpful as a reminder of your previous activity. Browsing history acts as a set of dynamically created bookmarks that you can refer to at a later time. This is especially useful for users who found an activity or facility before and can easily find it again in the search history.

Search recomendations:
We also grouped the search results into different categories to increase search relevance by showing different facilities, classes and APPs.
